How $35 Computers Are Changing the World
The UK-based Raspberry Pi Foundation passed a milestone in September, selling its 10 millionth computer. And it’s gearing up to hit US shores with its soon to be released kit for people who want to buy a computer for less than people spend for a round of craft beers.

Author and evangelist Matt Richardson will be on hand to talk about how low cost computing is changing the world by embedding intelligence in objects around us—and flying overhead.

The Elephant in the Valley: Gender Bias in the Technology Industry
Gender bias has become one of technology industry’s thorniest and most discussed issues. On Thursday afternoon, Michele Madansky, Hillary Mickell and Lisen Stromberg address the landmark “Elephant in the Valley” report that provided data documenting the workplace challenges in the tech industry.

The study was inspired by the impactful conversation that came out of the Ellen Pao / Kleiner Perkins trial from March 2015: “What we realized is that while many women shared similar workplace stories, most men were simply shocked and unaware of the issues facing women in the workplace.”

Madansky, Mickell and Stromberg will discuss the “Elephant in the Valley” survey, the reaction they have encountered since its release, as well as solutions they think the tech industry can embrace to improve upon the many problems exposed in this report.

The SoFA Design Crawl

SoFA isn’t just about arts and entertainment. The SoFA District is also home to the Santa Clara Valley AIA, as well as architecture and design firms with national and international reach. The 2016 SoFA Design Crawl will publicly recognize and celebrate these creative talents in a fun and exciting event.

Design firms will open their offices to showcase their work with boards, models, and other displays during a self-guided walk.  The Pierce apartments, developed by Sares Regis, will open for tours, galleries MACLA and San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles will host open houses, and Preservation Action Council will share their work in the historic 1918 Boschken Hardware, now Uproar Brewing.  Each venue will serve light appetizers and drinks. The goal is to stimulate public conversations about architecture, product and urban design, and create a new means of connecting community members with the design talent in the region.

Check in will be at the offices of Metro Silicon Valley newspaper, located at 380 S 1st St. Registrants will be given a wristband that can be marked off at the participating locations. Registrants can drop off their wristband with ten marks to be entered in a drawing for night out in SoFA.

Chaos Monkeys: Obscene Fortune and Random Failure in Silicon Valley
Antonio García Martínez will discuss his new book, Chaos Monkeys: Obscene Fortune and Random Failure in Silicon ValleyChaos Monkeys' title comes from public domain software Netflix developed to test systems for outages—the visual image being a raging chimp loose in the server room.

García Martínez praises the older, funkier valley—for VCs such as Paul Graham, who show up to work in Birkenstocks and shorts—over the shiny sushi-fed noobs demonstrating that venture capital is, as he writes, "the final redoubt of individuals with discipline and ambition but no actual talent."
